Three impish orphaned waifs, two brothers and a sister, try to cunningly eke out their survival on the streets. Sleeping under tunnels and in storage sheds by night, they sell the youngest by day. A clever boy he is - he always manages to escape his captors and return to his siblings in time to share in the indulgences wrought by his sale. As soon as the money peters out, he willingly submits to another caper.

The Story Behind the Painting: One morning the children were dressed in their mother's old skating and ballet costumes. They struck a somewhat mischievous pose for the camera, this roguish tableau was born. It was created with a rather tongue-in-cheek humor. Who hasn't, at some point, wished to sell off even a well loved brother or sister?
